National Do Something Nice Day

Every year on October 5th, people all across the nation celebrate National “Do Something Nice” Day. It always feels good when someone does something kind for us. Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget to be kind when we live in a world where it seems like we are constantly on the move! Luckily, National Do Something Nice Day gives us a reason to forget the hustle and bustle from our busy lives and make the world a better place. One good deed at a time.

Volunteering is a great way to make a difference! The gift of time is one that many take for granted, but giving your time to others in need is a perfect example of a kind deed. Whether you’re a local of the city or a guest at a Frontdesk suite, we’ve compiled a list of wonderful places that you can volunteer while you’re in one of our destinations.

Dallas, Texas

Crossroads Community Services is a non-profit organization that helps to take care of local, low-income members of their community. They specialize in providing meals and education for families who may otherwise be unable to obtain basic necessities. Through the help of volunteers, they have provided meals for over 4,000 children alone! Are you passionate about their mission? If so, you can view their current volunteer opportunities and apply to volunteer here. If you don’t have time to give, but would like to donate to the cause, you can do so easily through their website! Just $1 provides three meals for a child in need.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is a non-profit organization that helps rebuild beautiful public spaces while bringing the community together. They turn unused spaces into green spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone in the community. From planting trees in urban areas to restoring natural habitats in parks and waterways, KIB takes its mission to heart and offers many opportunities to volunteer. They also work hard to educate children and adults alike on how to help better the environment.

Kansas City, Missouri

Do you have a passion for reading or helping others learn a new skill? Literacy KC is an amazing non-profit that focuses on teaching adult students from all different. Skills taught include reading, writing, math, and more. You can volunteer as a tutor in one of their instructor-led classes, volunteer for special events such as luncheons or the spelling bee, as well as many other great opportunities! In the wise words of Dr. Suess, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Scottsdale, Arizona

Whether you’re in town for a short period of time or a local, Make-A-Wish Arizona offers wonderful volunteer opportunities to consider. If you’re going to be in the area for the long term, you can volunteer as a “wish granter” to meet with the child and family to help choose what their greatest wish would be. The wish granters also help plan special surprises along the way for the child as they wait for their wish to come true. Not planning to be in the area long but still want to volunteer for National Do Something Nice Day? Volunteer for an event through Make-A-Wish, or as an airport greeter meeting families at the airport for their child’s wish experience!

Being nice can be as easy as smiling at a stranger, or striking up a friendly conversation with someone in line at the coffee shop. In a time when it seems like all we hear about is negativity on the news, we have a chance to make a difference. It takes only seconds to change someone’s day for the better. Happy do-gooding!
