Milwaukee is offering a fall season full of excitement. One of many events coming up this October is Gallery Night and Day. This event highlights Milwaukee’s unique and creative culture, as well as some of its best local galleries and artists. Oh, and did we mention that it’s free?
This fall’s gallery hop takes place on October 18th and 19th and it provides attendees the chance to purchase original art from local Milwaukee artists. Gallery hoppers will not only get to see some great art, but there are plenty of terrific restaurants and unique boutiques to visit in the participating areas as well.
There are no set hours for the event, as each venue sets its own hours during Gallery Day and Night. There will be venues throughout East Town, the Historic Third Ward, Walker’s Point/South and Around Town. The event provides a complete map of the artists and galleries participating.
East Town Participants
There will be five venues throughout East Town Milwaukee. The David Barnett Gallery will feature the “130 Years of Posters” exhibit. This gallery will specifically feature posters from the 1890s Le Belle Epoch, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
“Big Top Pop Up” will also set up shop in the David Barnett Gallery and will present selections of artwork that explore the mirth and history of the circus. Both exhibitions will be Friday night from 5 PM – 9 PM and Saturday afternoon from 11 AM – 5 PM.
The Grohmann Museum is home to Roll Up Your Sleeves: Photography by Jim Brozek. The majority of Brozek’s pieces document workers in their trade. He goes further than just capturing the subject at work. He looks to capture their essence.
Walker’s Point Participants
Arts @ Large Community Center will be hosting a grand opening celebration at 1100 S 5th Street, beginning Friday at 5 PM and running through Saturday afternoon, ending at 2 PM. The new cafe will be open and there will be food and Purple Door Ice Cream.
The 10th Annual Recycled Art Contest sponsored by ReStore allows artists to showcase what may have otherwise ended up in the garbage. This annual event’s purpose is to challenge the public to use items from the ReStore and turn them into beautiful creations. All proceeds from this event will go directly towards helping Milwaukee Habitat build safe homes throughout the community.
Historic Third Ward Galleries
Cornerstone Realtors will be showcasing the works of Meredith Watts & Simone Ferro. This husband-wife duo has been showcasing their unique art with social justice, rivers, lakes and architecture at the center of it all.
Watts is a social scientist while Ferro is a professional artist, performer, and teacher at the UW-Milwaukee Department of Dance. She has a strong background in urban research, with a focus on architecture and the feeling of the streets.
Gallery hoppers will have the opportunity to arrange their succulents with La Terre at Elements East. Succulents are becoming more and more popular so this event may be a big hit. You can bring your own container or there will be some available for purchase as well.
