Located in the Bishop Arts District, Lockhart Smokehouse is a staple on all of the lists that highlight Dallas’ best BBQ spots. What makes Lockhart Smokehouse unique is they are firm believers in flavor and tenderness, as evidenced by their motto: “No sauce. No forks.”
Lockhart Smokehouse has been in business since 1948 and Pitmaster Tim McLaughlin continues to provide a consistent and delicious BBQ for the people of Dallas.
Whether you’re looking for brisket, chicken, turkey, sausage, or ribs, Lockhart Smokehouse is a must stop on your Dallas BBQ tour. They are dedicated to their craft and have the smokers running around the clock. Their website says, “The fires never die because if the pits go out, the smokehouse shuts down.”
The Slow Bone
The Slow Bone is another BBQ giant in the Dallas area, but what really sets this pit apart from others on the list is the other parts of their menu that people rave about. If you can get one thing from The Slow Bone then you absolutely have to get some form of BBQ, but if that doesn’t leave you feeling full then you have to dig into the fried chicken.
In addition to the main course, The Slow Bone has some pretty unique side dishes that sound pretty great. Jalapeño Mac & Cheese, Sweet Potato Praline, and their Horseradish Cream Potato Salad are all great dishes to pair with your BBQ. The one downfall to The Slow Bone is they’re only open from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. each day. So, if it’s on your list (and it should be!), plan accordingly.
If you’re looking for a traditional BBQ joint on the side of the road, then Meshack’s Bab-Be-Que is a must stop. Pitmaster Travis Mayes is the only guy in the pit, so you know the flavor is going to be consistent. It’s hard to talk about the best brisket in Dallas without Meshack’s being one of the first places mentioned.
Meshack’s is a bit off the grid. It’s quite literally a shack. They don’t have a website and their Facebook page is an unofficial page created by their raving fans. This place is an absolute must stop on your Dallas BBQ tour.
Pecan Lodge operates on a philosophy that the best things in life are smoked. It’s hard to disagree with them. They also have a pretty unique story that makes it an intriguing stop along your BBQ tour. The Pecan Lodge got its start in Shed #2 at the Dallas Farmers Market.
The owners, Justin and Dianne, quickly realized they were onto something and quit their 9-5 to spend more time with their family and focus on their BBQ business. It’s worked out pretty well so far and The Pecan Lodge was even voted one of the Top 4 BBQ joints in the world. That’s some pretty high praise!
The Pecan Lodge is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and Sunday. If you can’t make it for lunch, stop by on Friday or Saturday when they’re open from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
